This last week of September 2024 has been incredibly productive and fulfilling in my role as a member of the ICPAK council. Together with my fellow council members, led by our chairman CPA Philip Kakai, we engaged in several significant activities that highlight our commitment to enhancing public finance management in Kenya.
The week commenced with a courtesy call to the new Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, CPA John Mbadi. This meeting was crucial as it allowed us to establish a rapport with the new leadership and discuss our vision for collaboration moving forward. We emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in financial management, which are core values of ICPAK.
Following our meeting with CPA Mbadi, we represented ICPAK at Parliament where we presented our position on the proposed amendments to the Public Finance Management Act. This presentation took place before the Finance and Economic Planning Committee, chaired by CPA Kuria Kimani. It was an honor to share insights alongside FCPA Nancy Gathungu, the Auditor General. Our discussions focused on ensuring that any amendments made would enhance fiscal responsibility and improve governance within public finance. I am
Particularly keen on our proposal to have key positions in charge of treasuries and financial reporting to be held by members of the institute-the only body charged with responsibility to develop and regulate accountancy in the country.
Later in the week, we had a scheduled courtesy visit to Nyeri County Governor. Although he was unable to meet us due to an emergency, his deputy HE Waroe graciously received us. During this visit, we also had an opportunity to engage with the county secretary CS Gachichio, discussing local financial management issues and how ICPAK can support capacity building within county governments.
To cap off a busy week, I attended the ICPAK Mount Kenya Branch’s Annual Members Meeting (AMM). The event was extremely successful, showcasing our members’ dedication and commitment to professional development in accounting practices. It provided a platform for networking among members and sharing best practices that can be implemented across various sectors.
Overall, this week has been marked by meaningful engagements that not only strengthen our relationships with key stakeholders but also reinforce ICPAK’s mission of promoting excellence in public finance management across Kenya.
